Political Cartoon
The Great Migration was a movement that occurred during 1910 and 1920. Hundreds of thousands of African Americans had uprooted themselves from their homes in the South and moved north to the big cities in search of jobs. However, the search for jobs was not the only factor that made African Americans move north. The greatest effect of the First World War on African Americans' lives was that it accelerated the Great Migration. This political cartoon depicts the threat of extreme violence against black men and women. The image of the man being hung in this cartoon is just one of the many immense occurrences that happened in the southern states. An estimated 4,700 lynching's occurred in the United States between 1882 and 1968. The violence on this order was the principal motivating factor for black men and women in the Great Migration.
